Coil Technologies, Inc. (“Coil”, “we”, “our”, or “us”) was started because we wanted a way for you to access content effortlessly, fairly reward its creators, and do so without compromising on your right to privacy.

This Privacy Policy (“Policy”) describes our data practices for information we collect through our website at https://coil.com ("Website"), advertisements, emails, Web Monetization tools (defined below), and other services (collectively, the "Service"), including how we use and disclose your information and your rights and choices regarding your information. The Policy applies to any online location operated by us that links to this Policy.

By using our Service, you agree to our Terms of Service (“Terms”) and consent to our collection, use, disclosure practices, and other activities as described in this Policy. If you do not agree and consent, you must stop using our Service.

If you have any questions or wish to exercise your rights and choices, please contact us as set out in the “Contact Us” section.

1. Information Collection

A. Information You Provide Through the Website

We collect the following categories of information about you through our Website:

  • Contact Data, including your first name, last name, and email address.
  • Account Credentials, including your username and password.
  • Membership Data, including information about your purchases and membership status.
  • Payment Data, including your payment pointer, balance information, and withdrawal information.
  • Profile Data, including your upvotes, preferences, and profile picture.
  • Communications, including the content within any messages you send to us (such as feedback, upvotes, and questions to customer support) or any articles, comments, responses, links, or other content you submit to the Service.
  • Content, including any articles, comments, responses, links, etc. that you submit to the Service.
  • Job Application Data, including your resume and referrals.

We collect this information about you as follows:

  • Accounts: When you create an account through the Website, we collect your contact data and account credentials upon registration, and create an internal ID associated with your account. We also collect any profile data you submit in connection with your account.
  • Purchasing Subscriptions: When you purchase a subscription through the Website, our payment processor, Stripe, collects your billing data (such as your credit or debit card number, expiration date, and security code) as necessary to process your order. As part of this process, we also collect your membership data. Through Stripe, we can see your billing zip code, the last four digits of your credit card, and your card’s expiration date. We cannot see your card number in its entirety nor your card’s security (CVV) code.
  • Web Monetization: If you are a content creator, we collect your payment pointers and other payment data in order to facilitate payments to you. For more information on our Web Monetization Tools, please see the “Information Collected Through Web Monetization Tools” section below.
  • Customer Support: We record phone calls and collect the content of messages you send to us, such as feedback, questions, and information.
  • Job Application: When you apply for a job with us, we collect your job application data to process and evaluate your application and consider you for additional opportunities.

B. Information Collected Automatically Through the Website

We also automatically collect the following categories of information about you when you use or interact with our Website, advertisements, or emails:

  • Browsing Data, including data about:
  • Features you use or parts of the websites, ads, or emails you view.
  • Pages you visit on the Website.
  • Whether you click links in emails or ads from Coil.
  • The time of day you use or visit any websites, ads, or emails.
  • Your referring and exiting pages on the Website.
  • Device Data, including data about:
  • The type of device and browser you use.
  • Your device’s operating software.
  • Your device’s regional and language settings.
  • Your IP address and other device identifiers.
  • Location Data, including imprecise location (data that indicates a country, city, or postal code) derived from your IP address.

The tracking technologies used to automatically collect information include the following:

  • Log Files: A log file is a file that records events that occur in connection with your use of a website, ad, or email, such as your browsing data and device data.
  • Cookies: A cookie is an industry-standard small data file stored on your device that acts as a unique tag to identify your browser. We use two types of cookies: session cookies and persistent cookies. Session cookies make it easier for you to navigate websites and expire when you close your browser. Persistent cookies help with personalizing your experience, remembering your preferences, tracking referrals, and supporting security features. Persistent cookies may remain on your device for extended periods of time, and generally may be controlled through your browser settings.
  • Scripts: We put embeds in a page that send requests to external sites which may allow the external site to collect data about you and drop and read cookies on your browser. For example, we use scripts for website chat functionality.

For further information on tracking technologies and your rights and choices regarding them, see the next section and the section “Your Rights and Choices” below.

C. Information Collected Through Web Monetization Tools

Coil offers tools, including the “Coil Extension” and “Partner Sign In and Linking” that allow content creators to be paid when users visit their websites (“Web Monetization Tools”). These tools collect information and function as follows:

  • Coil Extension: The Coil Extension is an extension available for download through our Website that a user can install within their browser. Once installed, if a user visits a website or YouTube video that belongs to a content creator, the Coil Extension will automatically identify the website or YouTube video as belonging to a content creator based on the URL or other identifying factor. The Coil Extension will then initiate the payment process to the content creator using their payment pointer. The Coil Extension does not share any identifying information about the specific user with the content creator, although the content creator may receive information in the aggregate.
  • Partner Sign In and Linking: Coil partners with certain third-parties to allow them to monetize their sites without requiring users to have the Coil Extension installed. The process is as follows: A Coil user signs into their Coil account or creates a new Coil account and links the account to a partner. As part of this linking the partner is granted an access token to the user's Coil account. This token allows the partner to identify the user by an ID, and stream payments on the user’s behalf. As part of this process, Coil may receive the amounts sent, the payment pointer & ILP address where payments are sent, the partner client being used, the user, and the time of use.
  • In addition, Coil partners with certain third-party browsers so that the websites visited through the browser can be monetized without requiring users to have the Coil Extension installed.
  • Our partners’ use of user information is subject to the restrictions set out in our Coil API Terms of Use.

For information about your choices relating to the Web Monetization Tools, see the section “Your Rights and Choices” below. For more information on our Web Monetization Tools, please visit our Get the Coil Extension and OAuth Overview pages in our Help Center.

Notwithstanding the above, we may share information that does not identify you (including information that has been aggregated or de-identified) except as prohibited by applicable law. Please note that we will retain and use your information as necessary to comply with our legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements.

B. Tracking Technology Choices

  • Cookies: Most browsers accept cookies by default. You can instruct your browser, by changing its settings, to decline or delete cookies. If you use multiple browsers on your device, you will need to instruct each browser separately. Your ability to limit cookies is subject to your browser settings and limitations.
  • Do Not Track: Your browser settings may allow you to automatically transmit a “Do Not Track” signal to online services you visit. Note, however, there is no industry consensus as to what site and app operators should do with regard to these signals. Accordingly, unless and until the law is interpreted to require us to do so, we do not monitor nor take action with respect to “Do Not Track” signals. For more information on “Do Not Track,” visit http://www.allaboutdnt.com.

Please be aware that if you disable or remove tracking technologies, some parts of the Coil Service may not function correctly.

C. Interest-Based Advertising

The companies we work with to provide you with targeted ads are required by us to give you the choice to opt out of receiving targeted ads. Most of these companies are participants of the Digital Advertising Alliance (“DAA”) and/or the Network Advertising Initiative (“NAI”). To learn more about the targeted ads provided by these companies, and how to opt out of receiving certain targeted ads from them, please visit: (i) for targeted ads from DAA participants, https://www.aboutads.info/choices; and (ii) for targeted ads from NAI participants, https://www.networkadvertising.org/choices/. Opting out only means that the selected participants should no longer deliver certain targeted ads to you. It does not mean you will no longer receive any targeted content and/or ads (e.g., in connection with the participants’ other customers or from other technology services).

Please note that if you opt out of using any of these methods, the opt out will only apply to the specific browser or device from which you opt out. We are not responsible for the effectiveness of, or compliance with, any opt out options or programs, or the accuracy of any other entities’ statements regarding their opt out options or programs.

D. Communications

  • Emails: You can opt-out of receiving promotional emails from us at any time by clicking the unsubscribe link in an email, or by emailing us at [email protected] with the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the subject field. Please note that you cannot opt-out of non-promotional emails, such as those about your account, transactions, servicing, or Coil’s ongoing business relations.

Please note that your opt-out is limited to the email address used and will not affect subsequent subscriptions.

E. Unlinking Your Accounts

  • Coil Extension: If you wish to revoke access to the Coil Extension at any time, you can do so by uninstalling the extension from your browser.
  • Partner Sign in and Linking: If you wish to unlink your Coil account from a partner account which you granted access, you can do so through your Coil account settings.

Please note that removing the Coil Extension or unlinking your accounts will not affect any information previously shared. Coil is not responsible for the data practices of any other entities, and we recommend that you carefully review their privacy policies and terms of use.

The Service is intended for a general audience and not directed to children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly “sell,” as that term is defined under the CCPA, the personal information of minors under 16 years old who are California residents.

8. Data Security

We implement and maintain reasonable administrative, physical, and technical security safeguards to help protect information about you from loss, theft, misuse and unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, and destruction. If you are accessing the Service from outside of the U.S., please be aware that information collected through the Service may be transferred to, processed, stored, and used in the U.S. and other jurisdictions. Data protection laws in the U.S. and other jurisdictions may be different from those of your country of residence. Your use of the Service or provision of any information therefore constitutes your consent to the transfer to and from, processing, usage, sharing, and storage of your information in the U.S. and other jurisdictions as set forth in this Policy.
